چکیده

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate a transgenic source of corn grain containing the event DAS-Ø15Ø7-1 (TC1507) when included in diets fed to growing and finishing pigs. The commercial product trait name of TC1507 corn is Herculex I; this corn grain contains the cry1F gene from Bacillus thuringiensis var. aizawai and the phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (pat) gene from Streptomyces viridochromogenes. These 2 genes confer in planta insecticidal activity toward several corn pests and tolerance to herbicides containing the active ingredient glufosinate-ammonium. Ninety-six pigs were allotted to 4 dietary treatments with 3 pigs/pen and 8 pen replicates/treatment. The 4 dietary treatments consisted of corn-soybean meal diets formulated with a commercial source of corn, a standard corn, a control corn, or TC1507. Pigs were fed the experimental diets from 23.5 to approximately 120 kg BW, and the ADG, ADFI, and G:F were calculated. Hot carcass weights, back fat thickness, loin eye area, and loin eye depth were measured at slaughter, and dressing percentage and average lean meat percentage were calculated. Results of the experiment showed that pig performance was not affected by dietary treatments (P = 0.27 to 0.97) and there were no effects of dietary treatment on any carcass measurement (P = 0.13 to 0.95). Based on the results of this experiment, it was concluded that performance and carcass quality of pigs fed diets containing corn produced from seeds containing TC1507 were not different from those of pigs fed other corn hybrids.

Performance of growing-finishing pigs fed diets containing YieldGard Rootworm corn (MON 863), a nontransgenic genetically similar corn, or conventional corn hybrids.

Two studies were conducted at two locations to evaluate growth performance and carcass characteristics of growing-finishing pigs fed diets containing either YieldGard Rootworm corn (MON 863), a non-transgenic genetically similar corn (RX670), or two conventional nontransgenic corn hybrids (DK647 and RX740). A randomized complete block design with a 2 x 4 factorial arrangement of treatments (two...

Growth performance and carcass characteristics of pigs fed short-season corn hybrids.

An experiment was conducted to determine growth performance, carcass characteristics, and fat quality of growing-finishing pigs fed diets based on short-season corn hybrids. Twenty-four individually housed, Cotswold, growing pigs with an initial BW of 41.4 (SD = 1.4) kg were blocked by BW and sex and randomly allotted from within block to 1 of 3 diets to give 8 replicate pigs per diet. The effects of feeding sorghum dried distillers grains with solubles on finishing pig growth performance, carcass characteristics, and fat quality.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of feeding sorghum dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) in grain sorghum– or corn-based diets on pig growth performance, carcass characteristics, and carcass fat quality. A total of 288 finishing pigs (BW 58.8 ± 4.43 kg; Line TR 4 × 1050, PIC, Hendersonville, TN) were used in a 73-d study. Pigs were allotted to 1 of 6 dietary trea...

Evaluation of corn grain with the genetically modified input trait DAS-59122-7 fed to growing-finishing pigs.

A growth performance experiment was conducted to assess the feeding value of a double-stacked transgenic corn grain for growing-finishing pigs. The genetically modified corn grain contained event DAS-59122-7, which expresses the Cry34/35Ab1 binary insecticidal protein for the control of corn rootworm. This modified transgenic grain is resistant to western corn rootworm and is also tolerant to h...

Effects of increasing choice white grease in corn- and sorghum-based diets on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and fat quality characteristics of finishing pigs.

A total of 120 pigs (60 barrows and 60 gilts; TR4 × PIC 1050; 54.4 kg initial BW) were used in an 83-d study to evaluate the effects of added fat in corn- and sorghum-based diets on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and carcass fat quality. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial with grain source (corn or sorghum) and added fat (0, 2.5, or 5% choice white grease; CWG) as facto...
